Plan to be on the Island for the 41st annual Lion’s Club Fish Derby February 10 to noon February 18. Fishermen: make sure you register at Karly’s, Middle Bar II, Nelsen’s Hall, KK Fiske, or Mann’s Mercantile in order to be able to compete and enter your catch. Prizes will be announced at noon outside of Nelsen’s Hall on the 18th for the following categories: Lawyers, Salmon/Trout, Perch, Northern, Walleye. Each category offers 3 prizes. There is only a first prize for Whitefish. There will be a brat, hotdog, and chili lunch at Nelsen’s starting at 11 A.M. followed by B-I-N-G-O at 1 P.M
February 22nd is the annual Island picnic gathering in Florida. It will be held at 11 A.M. at Cape Sabel Drive in Naples. Grace Ann and Barry Carpenter are organizing it with help of others. It is a potluck lunch.
“Radio Theater” is the next Island Players show on February 11th at the TPAC. There will be a 2:30 and 7 P.M. performance. It will be produced by Henry Mohn. There is a new managing director for Island Players, Sarah Anderson. She replaces Amanda DeWitt who has most recently served as the managing director. Amanda will continue working with Island Players as a board member.
Candidates for the Washington Island School Board are incumbent, Thomas (Tom) Jordan and Robert (Bob) Wagner. There is one seat to be filled. Running for Town Board Supervisors are Elizabeth Holmes, Kirby Foss (incumbents) and William (Billy) Jorgenson. At the January 17th board meeting there will be some appointed positions.
15 shanties have appeared on Detroit Harbor and the number may increase as the February Lion’s Club Fish Derby draws closer.

The TV episode premier of "Door County - Live Life Well" is Saturday, January 13 at 10 a.m. on Fox Sports Wisconsin and at 6:30 p.m. on WFRV Channel 5 where Fragrant Isle is highlighted as Door County’s “All Things Lavender Destination”. The episode will also be available on discoverwisconsin.com for later viewing.
Beaver Island students were flown to our Island on Jan. 6 to compete against the girls’ and boys’ basketball teams. The Island teams won both games.
Washington Island Community Health Program News: Colleen Koziara, Nationally Certified Dementia Care Practitioner, will be the next speaker Jan. 18th for Food, Fun, and Facts for Later Life at Findlay’s. She will speak and also demonstrate Gentle Chair Yoga. Reservations into Laura Findlay-Hagen by Jan.16th. This includes lunch.
