There is a big influx of people for this weekend. Tomorrow is the The annual Ice Party is tomorrow, Saturday, in Detroit Harbor. There is food and fun and usually fireworks after dark. Each year monies are donated to some community organization. This year, reportedly, monies will be presented to the W.I. School Athletics Program.
Washington Island boys and girls basketball have been playing against off-Island teams. They travel to compete but also have home games with competing teams travelling here. The girl’s coach is Sarah Gibson and the boy’s coach is Shawn Young.
Did you know there is a Washington Island Junior Hype Squad? The students involved meet to learn new cheers and practice older routines. They will perform at a basketball game on the Island February 24th. Come out and cheer for the Island team along with the Hype Squad.
24 shanties were counted on Detroit Harbor, there was one on Figenschau Bay and one in West Harbor. The Lions Club Fish Derby starts this Saturday, the 10th. Next Sunday, the 18th, is the finale, with prizes awarded for the top fish in various categories at noon at Nelsen’s Hall. There will also be a lunch and BINGO at Nelsen’s following the judging.
