Custom Built Log Cabin
(897) Irv (Gibby) Goodlet had always wanted to build an authentic log cabin. Although he was in his eighties, he did not give up the dream and he began the project in earnest after he “retired” from beef cattle farming. He had planted trees with his father on the home property when he was about 14. Now that the trees had grown to maturity, he was able to cut and haul the logs to the building site he had cleared. The logs were then hand-hewn. He saddle notched the logs and made the cedar shingles himself. Gibby’s craftsmanship is evident in the details, inside and out, which include the intricate pattern of the shingles, wood hand-made door latches, a roofed hammock stand, the entry porch with stonework, the field stone fireplace, hand-made wood doors and wood kitchen cabinets, hand-laid wood floors, and a specially designed alcove that accents the beautiful upper level headboard of the bed. In the kitchen there is a working antique wood cook stove that reminds you of warmth and family and home-cooked meals. For day to day use you can also have an electric stove. The dining area is invitingly set with a country red checked table cloth. On the main level, there are two bedrooms featuring sparkling chandelier lighting. The living room is open to the ceiling, adding light and spaciousness and has a fireplace made from hand picked local field stone. There is a bath on the main level that features a claw foot tub. A half-bath on the upper level serves the bedroom upstairs and an open loft reading/sitting area. This is a great opportunity to own a custom constructed log cabin tucked off the road on about 9 acres of woodland.
