Washington Island Sights

1 ......... Heritage Nature Trail off Lobdell Point Road.  About 7/10 of a mile walk through the woodland. There is an informative kiosk at the trail’s beginning and a carry-along brochure that tells about some of the plants. 
2 ......... Expansive view over Detroit Harbor, Detroit Island.
3 ......... The trees on this road create a natural tunnel. If you can catch this road at the end of the day when the sun is going down, the “tunnel” will be darker and looking down East Side Road toward the intersection at Aznoe, there will be a golden glow.
4 ......... Deer siting locations, but keep a watch while driving as deer are plentiful.
5 ......... Red Barn Playground and shallower shore sandy beach. Ask about Red Barn programs for adults and kids! 13 acres includes picnic areas and grills. There are also nature walking paths through the woods.
6 ......... Sand Dunes Park for great sand. No grills, but picnic lunches permitted. There may be an algae bloom.
7 ......... Lake views to the east, from high hill. 
8 ......... Percy Johnson County Park, view of Hog Island (a National Wild Life Refuge), and a shallower shore. Great place to watch a sunrise. Picnic tables and grills.
9 ......... Mountain Park – 184 steps to the top of the tower. On a clear day you can see across beautiful Island vistas toward Escanaba, Michigan and Rock and St. Martin Islands 
10 ....... Schoolhouse Beach with sheltered harbor and rocks worn smooth by the waves. Read the history on the displays at the top of the beach and note there’s a fine for taking any stones off the property. The beach is named after a schoolhouse built there in 1850. Grills and picnic tables here. Flush toilets.
11 ....... Washington Harbor view. A great place to view the harbor and the sky and stars at night. 
12 ....... People’s Park – watch spectacular sunsets here.
13 ....... Little Lake: Here is the Jacobsen Museum and spring fed Little Lake.
14 ....... Bluff view – take care at the edge, but beautiful expansive lake views.
15 ....... Jackson Harbor: Watch the fish tugs come in with seagulls heralding their return, see ducks and swans, check out the Jackson Harbor Maritime Museum, and there’s a town dock.
16 ....... Jackson Harbor Ridges is a beautiful town owned preserve with paths, sandy shoreline.
17 ....... Carlin’s Point almost merges with the Ridges and together they make up 60+ acres of town owned protected land. Carlin’s Point can be reached by the access road where the sign is posted.
18 ....... Fall colors generally begin early on this road and feature lots of reds.
19 ....... Forget-me-nots along this section of road in May are particularly beautiful and thick. 
20 ....... Beach and Town Witness Tree. Check out the history and the public access stone beach. 
21 ....... Norwegian Stavkirke – lovely path to this beautiful meditation chapel. Read the inspriational entries from visitors and add your own thoughts.
22 ....... Farm Museum includes farm buildings from various locations on the island reassembled. Watch for  family planned activities during the summer and fall.
23 ....... The Art and Nature Center is housed in an old school building and has exhibits and a nature room. During the summer there are nature related activities for children and adults. 
24 ....... Rock Island State Park dock where you catch the boat, Karfi, to go over to the island. Only foot traffic. Great sandy beach, hiking paths, lighthouse tours. Camping allowed.
25 ....... Here you can stop your car, roll down the windows and hear the frogs in the bog sing! 
26 ....... Welcome Center for visitors. Information, bathrooms.
27 ....... The Community Center houses the Library  (stop and ask about special activities for kids), Island Medical Center, Archives, Town Office, a gym, and a community room.
28 ....... Rec Center where there is a swimming pool, whirlpool, tennis courts, workout room, community room. You can get daily and vacation passes. and year long memberships.
29 ....... Post Office: to mail your post cards from the Island!
30 ....... Memorial Monument built to honor Islanders who served in World War I. Since then  
 plaques have been added to honor those who served in World War II, Viet Nam &  Korean Wars.
31 ....... Performing Arts Center.  Year 'round activities such as plays, concerts, movies. Built in  
 memory of Wilson Trueblood and his daughter, Carol.
32 ....... 160 acre Richter Family Forest Preserve.  Entry sign and trail off Green Bay Road.
33 ....... Land Trust Trail.  Entry sign at north end of Main Road, walking trail.
